Karang Poste is a town in the Foundiougne department of the Fatick region , in the south-west of Senegal . The city is an important border crossing with Gambia .

Geographical location

Karang Poste is located in the south of the Foundiougne department between the communautés rurales Toubacouta in the north-west and Keur Samba Guèye in the north-east on the border with Gambia and has grown together structurally with the Gambian town of Amdalai on the other side of the border .

Karang Poste is 164 kilometers southeast of Dakar , 81 kilometers south of the Fatick regional prefecture and 58 kilometers south of Foundiougne . Karang Poste is the closest city in Senegal to the Gambian capital Banjul . This can be found 38 kilometers southwest of here, but on the southern side of the Gambia River and therefore only accessible via a ferry.

history

In 2007 the village of Karang Poste played a role in the planning of the communauté rurale (rural community) Keur Samba Guèye for the expansion of the drinking water supply and sewage disposal. In 2008, however, Karang Poste was spun off from the rural community and received the status of a commune (city). The urban area extends from the Great Mosque a certain number of kilometers in all four directions. Mathematically, this resulted in an urban area of ​​20.8 km².

On the southern outskirts of Karang Poste is the border crossing of the national road N 5 , which connects Kaolack through the hinterland of the Saloum Delta with Banjul , the capital of the neighboring country of Gambia . The N 5 is also part of the Dakar-Lagos Highway , one of the Trans-African Highways .

Karang Poste is connected to the Kaolack airport 72 km away and to the national air transport network via the N 5 .
