Tournefort's hackberry ( Celtis tournefortii ) is a large shrub or small deciduous tree from the genus of hackberry trees in the hemp family (Cannabaceae). The genus Celtis is often assigned to the elm family (Ulmaceae). The distribution area is in south-eastern and eastern Europe, in western Asia and in the Caucasus.

Tournefort's hackberry is a shrub or tree with bare shoots up to 6 meters high . The leaves have an egg-shaped, pointed blade 3 to 7 centimeters long with a rounded to slightly heart-shaped base and a serrated edge above the center. The upper side of the leaf is bluish green to gray-green and more or less hairy. The fruits grow on stems about 1 centimeter long. They are 8 millimeters tall and orange-yellow.

Distribution and location

The natural range in temperate Asia includes Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Cyprus and the Caucasus region in Azerbaijan . In Europe, the species is found in the Crimea in the Ukraine, in Greece, Croatia, Sicily, Macedonia and Montenegro. It grows in steppes and dry forests on dry to fresh, weakly acidic to strongly alkaline, nutrient-rich, sandy, sandy-gravelly or sandy-humic soils in sunny and hot locations. The species is sensitive to moisture and frost.

Systematics

Tournefort's hackberry ( Celtis tournefortii ) is a species from the genus of hackberry trees ( Celtis ). The genus, either the family of hemp plants assigned (Cannabaceae) or the family of elm plants (Ulmaceae). The species was first described in 1797 by Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck in his Encyclopedie Methodique .
