The Webtoon is published free of charge on the Naver and Line Webtoon platforms. As of February 2020, Tower of God had collected 4.5 billion views worldwide. Tower of God has been officially translated into eight languages by Naver and into 20 additional languages through fan translations on the official platform. An anime adaptation of the series has been running since April 1, 2020. Tower of God is the first anime to emerge from the Webtoon Crunchyroll deal . It is animated by Telecom Animation Film.

Emergence

Author Lee Jong-hui studied fine arts at university level before he was drafted into the South Korean military. On the advice of an older military man, Jong-hui began drawing cartoons. During this time he drew exercise cartoons that comprised a total of ten exercise books . These exercise cartoons form the backbone of the Tower of God comics, which he later began creating for the internet. Jong-hui plans important events and characters sometimes more than eight years in advance, and often provides additional information about the world of Tower of God in his blog post after each chapter is published . Tower of God was published in South Korean for the first time in 2010, and various fan translations were made. Four years after the series began, Tower of God received official translations from Line Webtoon . All unofficial fan translations have since been discontinued.

action

Tower of God revolves around the boy Twenty-Fifth Bam, who spent most of his life under a huge, mysterious tower. His close friend Rachel kept him company. Rachel desires to see the stars and decides to enter the tower, thus withdrawing from Bam's company. Longing for her, he manages to open the door of the tower and enters the tower to follow her. In the course of the plot, the lore, the stories and the motivations of important characters and factions are explained, who determined or tried to change the fate of the tower for over 10,000 years. Little by little, secrets are revealed and added as readers learn about the struggles and achievements of the tower's residents.

scenario

The tower

The tower is a mysterious structure that is completely enclosed and houses many unique environments. It is permeated with an element called "Shinsu" which has properties similar to magic in other comic book universes. It is inhabited by many different intelligent species. Life on the top floors is associated with a higher status in the tower and better living conditions. This is a result of moving up from one floor to the next, which is only allowed by passing increasingly difficult tests of strength, dexterity and willpower. The former elect who reach the top of the tower are known as rankers and are generally much more powerful than others. Rankers are often tasked with managing the lower floors. At the top of the tower are the "10 Big Families" who make up the tower's governing body. A figure known as King Jahad is the main leader of this body.

Each floor is made up of three layers: an external external tower that serves as a residential area, an internal tower where people are tested, and a central area that acts as a network connecting each floor. The residents of each floor have the option of ascending provided they are rated "worthy" by Headon, the guardian and administrator of the tower on the first floor. Such people are called "elect" in the tower of God. The tower is protected from the huge, unknown "outside" by huge, impenetrable doors. In rare cases, extraordinary people can open the doors and enter the tower. Such people are called the "unselected", the protagonist Twenty-Fifth Bam is one of them.

According to the author, each floor is the size of the North American continent. Each floor often has its own culture, language, and government systems. It is not uncommon for nations to live in isolation and be unaware of the Tower's existence.

Only the unselected are exempt from the contract that Jahad made with the tower guards who made him immortal. Thus only an unselected one can kill Jahad. This fact determines much of the action in the Tower of God.

Shinsu

Shinsu, roughly translated as "divine water", is a substance that occurs in the tower in different concentrations on each floor. On the lower floors, Shinsu is diffuse and inconspicuous, similar to air. On higher floors, however, Shinsu increases in strength and concentration and is said to be viscous and flow like water. A high Shinsu resistance is required to step on these floors. The residents of the tower have to sign a contract with the "administrator" of the respective floors in order to manipulate Shinsu. However, a person known as the "Unselected" seems to be an exception to this case, with one (Enryu) even managing to kill a seemingly immortal administrator of a floor.

Shinsu can be manipulated to improve physical skills and powerful weapons, and even manipulate the elements. Bang is the number of discrete units of Shinsu control. The more bangs someone handles, the better the ability to control Shinsu. The size of the units is called the mueon and the concentration is called the soo. Although it is used with varying degrees of explicity and even conscious awareness, its use appears to be inextricably linked to the struggle within the tower. Shinsu reinforcement is a body strengthening technique and is widely used by the elect. Those who are strong with Shinsu have slowed their aging process down so effectively that they become effectively immortal. It is unclear to what extent aging is slowed down by simply living in the tower without practicing Shinsu.

Shinsu does not have a fixed flow, but there is a temporary flow. Using this flow to attack is known as flow control. Experienced wave controllers could use it to destroy a village. The backflow control is used to hit back in the direction of flow and stop the opponent. Sometimes they are used at the same time, attack with flow control, and protect the body with backflow control. Flow control is a preferred technique of Twenty-Fifth Bam.

Positions

Most battles in the tower are fought in teams. Each person on a team plays a specific role in combat called positions. There are five basic positions: fisherman, spear bearer, light bearer, scout and wave controller.

Characters

Twenty-Fifth Bam / Jue Viole Grace

Twenty-Fifth Bam is the protagonist of Tower of God. Bam is the last to enter the tower. Because of his young age and naivete, his abilities do not resemble those for which formerly the unselected are known. Bam enters the tower in search of his best friend Rachel, the only person who visited and cared for him during the years of isolation he spent in a cave under the tower. After entering the tower, he is told that any answers he is looking for will be answered when he climbs the tower. As a condition, it must pass a seemingly impossible and fatal test. Bam is successful and is allowed to move to the second floor, where all the prospective elect begin their ascent. Bam makes several friends among the candidates with whom he passes many tests.

Bam returns in "Tower of God: Part 2", which takes place six years after the original story. He uses his pseudonym Jue Viole Grace there. In this story, Bam is under the control of the infamous anti-Jahad group FUG. He works with them to protect his old teammates. But not long afterwards his old teammates find out that he is alive and operating under the pseudonym Ju Viole Grace. They set up a plan to rid Bam of FUG. The plan works and Bam was released from FUG control. Bam and his teammates then go through a series of adventures on the Hell Express.

Bam returns in "Tower of God: Part 3", which takes place a few years after the battle for the last station. Ha Jin Sung, Bam's teacher in FUG, was captured by Kallavan, who is in control of a unit in Jahad's army. To save Ha Jin Sung, Bam needs help from the King of the Dogs, Baylord Yama, a FUG hunter. He and his teammates set out on another adventure in the cage where the dogs live.

Rachel

Rachel was Bam's best friend until she entered the tower and became a chosen one. She wants to see the stars in the night sky atop the tower and is determined to reach them by all means. This desire comes from her fear of the dark of night. She is later wounded and pretends to be severely crippled. At this point Bam explains that he will be "her legs" and help her climb the tower further. In a later test, she decides to betray Bam and tries to kill him. She convinces his friends that Bam died to protect him. She benefits from the pity of the group who want to continue the task Bam started: to carry Rachel to the top of the tower. Six years later, Bam finds out that Rachel is part of the FUG. She then goes with Khun, Aguero and Agnes and climbs the tower. Rachel and two new teammates on their new team decide to betray the group. They kill one and injure another on their team. She soon meets Bam again, only to push him away again. Rachel meets a woman named Yura Ha on the train and they become friends. She promises to show Yura the stars. For her own purposes she decides to help the former FUG hunter "White".

Khun Aguero Agnes

Khun Aguero Agnes comes from one of the 10 noble families who climbed the tower for the first time and is the son of the high-ranking Khun Eduan. He meets Bam on the first test on the second floor and thinks he's interesting enough to accompany and help him climb the tower. He and Rak quickly become Bam's closest friends. He is usually in the position of the light bearer, but has been shown to be capable of simple hand-to-hand combat when the situation calls for it.

Rak Wraithraiser

Rak Wraithraiser is a tall, powerful and very confident bearer. He involuntarily teamed up with Twenty-Fifth Bam and Khun Aguero Agnis at the beginning of the story and was quickly tied to them on the tests that followed. Because of its reptile-like properties, it is sometimes referred to as an "alligator" or "gator" and even a "crocodile". Rak refers to his friends and people he meets as "turtles" in various colors and characteristics (e.g. black turtle, blue turtle, crazy turtle); the term with which he seriously addresses his "prey". Rak can change its size so that it is smaller and more compact because it is a compression Lisensor that can change its size at will. Rak can control stones and / rocks. He is possibly a descendant of an extinct native species of the tower.
