Chikashi Toyoshima
Chikashi Toyoshima ( Japanese 豊 島 近 , Toyoshima Chikashi ; * 1954 in Akita Prefecture ) is a Japanese biophysicist at the University of Tokyo . He is best known for his electron microscopic and X-ray crystallographic work on the structure and function of members of the P-type ATPase family, including the sodium-potassium pump and the calcium pump . His first pictures of an ion pump made it onto the cover of Nature . Toyoshima, he developed novel processes for protein crystallization in phospholipid environments.
Toyoshima grew up in Honjō (now Yurihonjō ). He studied physics at the University of Tokyo, where he obtained a master's degree from Ebashi Setsurō and a D.Sc. in biophysics. Toyoshima then worked as a postdoctoral fellow with Nigel Unwin at Stanford University and at the University of Cambridge . He has been back in Japan since 1989, initially as a researcher at RIKEN , and from 1990 as a professor at Tōkyō Kōgyō Daigaku . Toyoshima has been with the University of Tokyo since 1994. Today he is Professor of Protein Biochemistry and Director of the Center for Bioinformatics .
In 2005 Chikashi Toyoshima was elected as a foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences . He received the Asahi Prize from the Asahi Foundation in 2009 and the Gregori Aminoff Prize from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 2016 .
