action

The sheriff of a commune (in the English version: Mason City) has a hard time to do: First he catches the ragged Mexican horse thief Paco in the act, then the notorious womanizer Jerry jumps right in front of his feet while escaping from a horned husband, and Finally, he can also arrest the dreaded "Pistolero" Reno, who has just "produced" a number of corpses again. While in custody, the three met a nightmarish execution candidate named Francesco Ortega; after his petition for clemency has been rejected, the law enforcement officer transfers him to another cell. But one night the trio is given freedom by an unknown hand; With a clergyman they find out the reason for this: They are supposed to find the real culprit (s) in the ten days up to the execution date. Ortega's father promotes the willingness of the slightly perplexed trio by offering a 30,000 dollar bonus.

So Jerry & Co. set about implementing the offer, but encountered unexpected and tough resistance from the start: Paco is recognized at a horse seller and immediately prepared for a strangulation that his two partners thwart at the last second. Then the bandit Juan wants the compatriot, but is also eliminated, and finally Reno is driven from the land of the murdered Fletcher by a rod. Meanwhile, in a remote mill, Jerry makes the acquaintance of the attractive Dolores, who certainly knows something about the crime, but does not want to disclose this information. So the detective-like investigations of the three drag on, they get into dangerous situations again and again, which they escape with luck and skill. When the conflict escalates and Dolores is fatally wounded in a firefight, she is ready to write down a confession that incriminates Rod and Mulligan's attorney on a piece of paper. Before this information saves the life of Ortega, who is already wearing a rope around his neck, more shootings have to be survived (Jerry and Paco are wounded) and Rod has to be put in a carriage, which is steered by Reno, who is also battered, to the place of execution . There Mulligan then shoots his accomplice Rod, but thanks to the incriminating material, he himself is ready for the hangman. Reno serves his remaining sentence and is then allowed to collect the premium; Jerry and Paco, who have recovered, also appear on the bench to get their deserved share.

criticism

Segnalazioni Cinematografiche saw “an absurd story in which the western milieu is only a backdrop. There are many psychological elements and a naive introduction of the surreal to make the story more interesting. Average in performance and direction. ” Christian Keßler calls Sergio Garrone“ not a particularly untalented director ”and this film is one of his best.
