Trevor (duck)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Trevor († January 2019 on Niue ) was a male mallard . He was the only duck to live on the isolated Pacific island of Niue, which is politically linked to New Zealand . The news of the death of the loneliest duck in the world received worldwide attention.

Life

There is no reliable information about Trevor's origin. Maybe he was from New Zealand . How he came to Niue is also unknown. One theory is that he was carried to Niue during a storm, another that he came as a stowaway on a ship.

Trevor was spotted for the first time on Niue in early 2018. Since there is no inland water on the rocky island , he lived in a puddle at the edge of a road. There he was regularly fed by humans. In order to preserve its living space, its puddle was filled by the fire brigade and thus prevented from drying out. The drake , possibly from New Zealand, received the first name of the New Zealand politician Trevor Mallard , whose last name is the English-language name for mallard.

New Zealand Herald's journalist Claire Trevett became aware of Trevor, who was already a local celebrity, in the summer of 2018 because the duck was used as a route description and first reported on him in early September. International media such as ABC , The Guardian and The Telegraph took up the topic. The Daily Mail quoted New Zealand diplomat Kirk Yates as saying that the duck's welfare was a national concern. The head of the Niue Tourism Authority welcomed the international coverage that raised awareness of the small island of Niue. Trevor's Facebook profile was run by the head of the Niuean Chamber of Commerce, Rae Findlay.

In January 2019, Trevor was attacked by dogs and fatally injured. On January 25, it was confirmed that he was found dead. Trevor Mallard offered his condolences to the Niueans on behalf of the New Zealand House of Representatives .

The duck had 2,000 friends on Facebook, around 300 more than Niue residents.
