dual study

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Based on the dual training system, a university degree with firmly integrated practical assignments in companies is referred to as a dual study program . It differs from “classic” courses in that it is more practical, which varies depending on the course and university.

The advantage of such a degree is the achievement of two recognized degrees in a very short time, as both are completed in parallel. In most cases, the total duration of the individual subject areas is further shortened, for example by extending the usual lecture times per week. In some cases, it is possible to complete a bachelor’s degree plus a semester abroad and vocational training including practical experience in just 3.5 years. Of course, this also increases the burden on the students. They usually combine subject areas that can be professionally combined with one another, such as a Bachelor of Arts - Business Administration in connection with a professional qualification in the commercial field .

definition

There is still no uniform definition of the term dual study program (also dual study program or cooperative study program ). Nevertheless, over the years a sharper definition has developed in science and practice, which is gaining more and more acceptance. This helps to better distinguish the dual course of study from a traditional course of study and vocational training .

In practice , a dual study program is regularly referred to as a coordinated combination of theoretically oriented study and practical work in a company or a similar organization. The main features of a dual study program are:

  • Studies: During studies, theoretical knowledge is imparted at a university or vocational college. The course is the theoretical focus of the dual course, in which the demands are significantly higher than in vocational training .
  • Practice partner: The practice partner can be a company, a social organization or a state institution. The dual student works there, is trained there in the practice and usually receives a fixed salary from the practice partner.
  • Link between theory and practice: theory and practice are a unit in the dual study program and are coordinated in terms of content, organization and timing. In contrast to internships in a normal course of study, the practical assignments during the dual course are part of a single comprehensive training concept.

According to the Science Council of the Federal Republic of Germany, a course of study is a dual course of study if two conditions are met:

  • Duality: The two learning locations, university and company, are coordinated with one another. For this, the training at both learning locations must be coordinated from an organizational point of view. In terms of content, studies and tasks in the company must be related to one another. According to this, a part-time course without a content or organizational reference to the job is not a dual course.
  • Academic nature of the course: In order to be able to speak of "studies", a dual course of study must be a science-related training format and meet the requirements of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs on education in the tertiary sector of October 15, 2004. It is recommended that at least half of the learning time of the dual student should be spent at the university or vocational academy.

Types

The Science Council of the Federal Republic of Germany divides the dual study programs in Germany based on the design of the study section (initial training or further education as well as with vocational training or with practical parts) and the relationship between the learning locations (interlinked or parallel) as follows (English-language name in brackets):

  • Vocational Training Attendant Learning Programs
  • Integrating training courses (Vocational Training Integrated Learning Programs)
  • Job Attendant Learning Programs
  • Job Integrated Learning Programs
  • Work Attendant Learning Programs
  • Integrating practical courses (Work Integrated Learning Programs)

In English-speaking countries, the dual study programs are assigned to the generic term Cooperative Education .

Social insurance

It was questionable whether a dual course of study is an employment relationship subject to social insurance or whether there is compulsory student insurance . In December 2009, the Federal Social Court made differentiations in a fundamental decision, which the legislature revised by the fourth law amending the fourth book of the social security code as of January 1, 2012: All participants in all forms of dual study programs are to be treated uniformly under social insurance law and treated as such for vocational training employees. You are therefore compulsorily insured in the statutory health insurance and long-term care insurance. This applies for the entire duration of the course, i.e. both during the practical phases and during the study phases.

forecast

Several statistics and studies suggest that the number of trainees will decrease by 2025. This information is confirmed year after year as many apprenticeships are not filled. Only in 2013 were 33,000 apprenticeship positions unfilled. Many experts believe that the dual study programs will soon take the place of training.

Trials degree

Since 2015, selected universities, such as the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences , have offered a triale course, which combines teaching, a master's certificate and a bachelor's degree in business administration. The program lasts five years and requires a six-day week from participants because of the heavy workload.
