Tribulation was a Swedish thrash metal band from Surahammar that was founded in 1986 under the name Pentagram and disbanded in 1994.

history

The band was founded in 1986 under the name Pentagram. The band consisted of the singer and guitarist Mikael "Toza" Tossavainen, the guitarist Stefan Neuman, the bassist Daniel Hojas and the drummer Magnus Forsberg, who according to Daniel Ekeroth was probably Sweden's most important tape trader and therefore of great importance for the scene. The group released their first demo, Infernal Return , in October 1986 ; Metalion from the Norwegian Slayer helped promote the band and distributed free copies to fanzines and radio stations. The second, self-titled demo followed in February 1987, and the band renamed themselves Tribulation, after a song by Possessed . In March 1988, the next demo followed with Pyretic Convulsions . In the same year, the split release Is This Heavy or What? together with Atrocity , Damien and Gravity. This was followed by the demo Void of Compassion . In addition, the band could be heard with the song Bellicose Nations on the compilation Hard-Core for the Masses - The Core of Sweden . Another demo, Posers in Love , recorded at Musikstugan Studios , was released in December 1990. This was followed by performances with Napalm Death , Mucky Pup , Carcass and Entombed . In 1991 the debut album Clown of Thorns followed through Black Mark Production . The vinyl version of the album also contained the bonus song. In 1993, Neuman was replaced by Harvey Wallhanger's Daniel Sören; the next demo was also released, followed by the EP Spicy in 1994 , before the band "self-terminated" in the same year and became the punk / rock band Puffball.

style

Metalion saw in Infernal Return slight similarities with Bathory , who were considered by all members of the band as the best Swedish band next to Mefisto. In addition, the music is inspired by Exodus and Possessed . Robert Müller from Metal Hammer described Clown of Thorns as "crossing the border between Hardcore and Thrash", where the vocals almost fall into spoken chant . The songs are described as original, especially in the first half of the album. In his Clown of Thorns review for Rock Hard , Frank Albrecht described the work as "absolutely difficult to digest material". It is a "blatant mixture of ( country ) punk, hardcore, psycheledic and metal ". In all the different style excursions, "but wild hardcore attacks dominate". Daniel Ekeroth described the early style as strange thrash metal, which gradually transformed into strange experimental rock. The change of style began when death metal gained prominence in the scene. Ekeroth regards the early work as significantly better than the later recordings.
