Life cycle of Trichomonas vaginalis

Trichomonas vaginalis , and Trichomonas urogenital , is a parasitic occurring protozoan in the urogenital tract ( mucosa ) of the people and as such pathogens of trichomoniasis . In 2016, the parasite wasnamed " Protozoa of the Year " bythe German Society for Protozoology .

distribution

The parasite is only transmitted through direct contact ( mucosal contact from person to person), so it is a sexually transmitted disease . Trichomonas vaginalis occurs worldwide.

features

Trichomonas vaginalis is irregularly oval and often deformed. The length is up to 25 µm . An increase takes place through longitudinal division. As is typical for the genus, Trichomonas vaginalis has no mitochondria . Instead, hydrogenosomes are used to generate energy .

The sequence of the genome was published in January 2006 and is about 160 megabases in size. About two thirds of it consists of repeats and transposable elements and is larger than all previously known genomes of protists.

Life cycle

Trichomonas vaginalis does not form cysts, but trophozoites and is only transmitted directly from host to host.

therapy

Due to the anaerobic lifestyle of the parasite, nitroimidazole derivatives (mostly metronidazole ) are the treatment of choice for this trichomonas infection. Attention should be paid to dose adjustments during pregnancy and breastfeeding as well as the treatment of the sexual partner.
