Trifolium sect. Chronosemium is a section in the genus clover ( trifolium ). With 17 species in America, it is the fourth largest section of the genus. The species are divided into five series. The main hallmarks of the section are the eye-catching two-lipped calyx, the persistent crown with a spoon-shaped or boat-shaped flag and the solitary fruits.

description

The species of the Chronosemium section are annual , herbaceous plants . The inflorescences are multi-flowered and cape-spherical to ovate. They are rarely bloomed and panicle-like . The single flowers are short stalked. The flower stalks bend when the fruit ripens.

Agraria series : Gold clover ( Trifolium aureum )

Bracts are present and tiny or completely absent. The calyx is often bell-shaped and five-nerved. The calyx tube is open and bare. The calyx teeth are unequal, the two posterior ones are significantly shorter than the three anterior ones, and give the calyx a two-lipped appearance.

The petals are yellow, purple or pink, but never white. They are retained when the fruit ripens, bend over and dry up. The flag is clearly spoon-shaped or boat-shaped.

The legume is stalked or sessile and has one or two seeds. It is hidden behind the remaining crown.

distribution

The species of the Chronosemium section are found in Eurasia, mainly on the Mediterranean. Neophytic occurrences of individual species can also be found in Africa and North America.

Systematics
