Michael Zohary

Michael Zohary (* 1898 in Bibrka , Austrian Galicia ; † April 15, 1983 in Jerusalem ) was an Israeli botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Zohary ".

His son was Daniel Zohary (1926-2016), an agronomist and geneticist.

Live and act

Michael Zohary emigrated from Europe to Palestine in 1920. In 1926 he began to work at the newly founded Hebrew University of Jerusalem with Alexander Eig and Naomi Feinbrun on the flora of Israel and the neighboring countries of the Middle East. He discovered the principle of antitelechory in desert plants. In 1936 he received his doctorate on this phenomenon at the Charles University in Prague .

His main interest has always been the flora of Israel. He published seven large monographs on the genera clover ( Trifolium ), pistachios ( Pistacia ) and tamarisks ( Tamarix ). He also wrote the first two volumes of the Flora Palaestina (Pteridophyta and Dialypetalae, 1966 and 1972). In 1962 he wrote The Plant Life of Palestine and 1973 Geobotanical Foundations of the Middle East .

Zohary retired in 1967, but continued his work in the herbarium. His last book, Plants of the Bible , appeared a few weeks before his death. It appeared in German translation as early as 1983.

In 1954 he was awarded the Israel Prize . In 1973 he received the Rothschild Prize for Life Sciences. Three wild plants native to Israel, the labiate Stachys zoharyana , the daisy family Anthemis zoharyana and the asparagus family Bellevalia zoharyi were named after him.
