Trillian is an instant messenger from Cerulean Studios for various protocols. The program is available for Windows , macOS , Android and iOS . There is still a client-independent web version (access via web browser). This makes it possible to communicate via various protocols with people who use other instant messengers or social networks.

With the currently available versions you can communicate with users of the instant messaging networks Astra, AIM , Google Talk , Facebook , ICQ , XMPP and IRC via text chat. Audio and video chats are also possible in the Astra network as well as webcam broadcasts in Yahoo! Social networks such as Facebook, including Facebook Chat, MySpaceIM, Twitter , Foursquare, VZ networks and LinkedIn are also supported. Even Bonjour with the supplied in plug- be used. There are also other plug-ins for other protocols, such as the Novell GroupWise Messenger.

The program was named after Tricia (Marie) McMillan , called Trillian , a main character from the book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams . The program is in C and C ++ programming .

Plug-ins and skins

Plug-ins are both Cerulean Studios itself (such. As an integrated spell checker ( Spell Check ), a mini-browser for viewing AIM profiles in HTML format and most network plug-ins (ICQ, AIM, Skype, WLM, Jabber, Yahoo, Bonjour)) as well as by independent programmers of the community . Examples of the former include the Skype plug-in, for the latter an audio player ( Trilly Tunes ) and various plug-ins that replace outdated plug-ins provided by Cerulean Studios (e.g. checking POP3 and IMAP Exchange Online mailboxes for new messages ( My mail ), a feed reader ( Good News ), a translator and various games). A list of many plug-ins can be found on the Cerulean Studios website, and others can be found in the plug-in area of the official forum.

Chat histories are saved as xml and txt files and synchronized with other simultaneously connected devices. Customers with an active Pro license can also save the history online and access it from anywhere.

There are also various skins available for the Windows version that can be used to change the appearance of the user interface. Most of these skins were also developed by members of the Trillian community. Many skins for free download can be found on the official website and in the skin area of the forum.

Plug-ins

useful information

Encryption

If both conversation partners use Trillian, it is possible to chat encrypted with SecureIM via ICQ and AIM . A 128-bit Blowfish encryption is used for this. When chatting over the Astra network, encrypted transmission is generally used. Encryption with off-the-record messaging (OTR) is only possible using a third-party plug-in. However, this plug-in is out of date and no longer works correctly with the current versions.

Instant lookup

As of version 3.0, Trillian enables Instant Lookup to directly look up words from chat conversations in Wikipedia. Incoming and outgoing texts are automatically linked to Wikipedia entries. You can recognize such words by the fact that they are underlined. If you then move the mouse over the underlined text, the Wikipedia text appears in a small window. Unfortunately, information is only retrieved from the English Wikipedia and this function can slow down slow systems due to a higher CPU load. Alternatively, you can mark a word with the right mouse button and choose between several search engines , such as Wikipedia, in which the word is then searched for in the browser .

Conversation history

Trillian Pro supports the online storage of all conversations; in the free desktop versions, these are stored locally as txt and xml files and, if a Pro license is purchased, synchronized with the Astra server.

Hidden emoticons

From version 2.0 Pro there are some emoticons, including animated ones, that are not visible in the normal list. After entering certain character combinations (e.g. <:) and O :-) ) the emoticons appear in the chat window.

synchronization

The various Trillian clients (e.g. mobile and PC) can be operated simultaneously. The settings (such as the user list) and the messages on the various platforms are synchronized via the Trillian server. Communication started on one device or on the web can be seamlessly continued on another. In the mobile version, the connection to the networks is maintained via the server even if the mobile connection is briefly interrupted. With a pause mode, it can even be held for several hours with the mobile device switched off.
