The Trolli GmbH (formerly Mederer Süßwarenvertriebs GmbH ) is a German manufacturer of confectionery .

history

In 1948, company founder Willy Mederer started with the production of pasta . When sugar rationing was lifted a short time later , the company switched to manufacturing confectionery . In the 60s came cream cones , coconut products , jelly banana , Pfefferminzfondant and jellied fruits which will under the brand name Wilmed were expelled, who for Wil ly Med erer stood. At that time the company employed around 150 people.

In 1975 a new fruit gum was initially developed under the brand name Trolli the Bear and from 1980 under the name Trolli , based on the Nordic trolls , who were child-friendly forest creatures. This enabled the American confectionery market to be conquered quickly.

After the death of Willy Mederer in 1984 his son Herbert took over the management . He expanded Trolli into the United States in 1986 and built a manufacturing facility in Creston, Iowa , which was sold in 1997.

In 1994 the company expanded to Spain and founded the Spanish branch in Valencia . In the same year, another production facility was opened in Jakarta , Indonesia .

In 1995 the Czech branch was founded in Pilsen for packaging and packaging .

In 1998, the confectionery manufacturer Efruti was integrated into the company. Two years later, the Gummi Bear Factory brand with the production facilities in Boizenburg and Hagenow was taken over.

In 2001 the company expanded to China and opened another production facility in Guangzhou under a joint venture , which was completely taken over in 2004.

In 2007, the Hagenow location was expanded further and a new high-bay warehouse was opened there .

In 2011, after the sale of Mederer USA in 1997, another US subsidiary was founded with headquarters in Chicago with a sales office and warehouse. A year later, Mederer Süßwarenvertriebs GmbH was renamed Trolli GmbH.

On October 20, 2011, Trolli announced that it wanted to close its production site in Fürth and completely relocate production to Hagenow by the end of 2012 . For this purpose, the production capacity at this location is to be increased. As a result, 170 jobs will be cut. This measure caused demonstrations on March 24, 2012 in front of the Trolli factory premises. Due to the economic crisis, the old location was retained.

The company employs around 1,790 people at seven locations in Germany, Spain, the Czech Republic and China. In addition to the headquarters in Fürth , Mederer is represented with plants in Hagenow , Boizenburg and Neunburg vorm Wald .

From 1 July 2010 until the end of June 2014, the company was a sponsor of the football club SpVgg Greuther Fürth and name sponsor in the course of in Trolli Arena renamed football stadium in Fuerth .
