Creston is located in the central southwest of Iowa in the headwaters of the Platte River , a left tributary of the Missouri . The border with the neighboring state of Missouri runs 35 miles south. About 130 km west of Creston the Missouri forms the border between Iowa and Nebraska .

Creston was founded in 1868 as a railroad workers camp of the then Burlington and Missouri River Railroad (merged into the BNSF Railway ). It was named after that here the vertex (s: crest ) the distance between the Missouri and the Mississippi was.
