The tropical girdle tail or dwarf girdle tail ( Cordylus tropidosternum ) is a species from the genus of the girdle tails ( Cordylus ) within the family of the belt lizards (Cordylidae).

Distribution and origin

The dwarf belt tails occur predominantly in southern Africa . The main distribution areas include Mozambique , Zimbabwe , Kenya and Tanzania . In the northern distribution areas, they can also be found in southern Ethiopia . They prefer to inhabit savannas or dry steppe areas with bush-like vegetation, but also highland savannahs or in coastal areas . They are often found there in the dead wood under dead tree trunks.

They are pure carnivores and feed mainly on invertebrates such as insects , worms and beetles .

Description and way of life

The dwarf belt tail reaches total lengths of up to 18 cm. The animals live in dry areas on or under dead wood and tree trunks.

Cordylus tropidosternum comes from habitats with temperature fluctuations . Night-time reductions below 20 ° C are not uncommon.
