The Trump International Hotel and Tower , also known as Trump Tower for short , is a 98-story skyscraper in Chicago , USA , which was completed in 2009. It has since been the second tallest building in Chicago and currently the fourth tallest in the United States . The building is owned by the well-known real estate company The Trump Organization , which was run by the later 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump . The skyscraper was designed by the American architecture firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill .

Planning and construction
Construction of the building began in May 2005 after the project was presented to the public in 2001. At that time, project developer Donald Trump announced that he wanted to build the tallest building in the world in Chicago. However, after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 in New York, this plan was abandoned due to security concerns. Instead, the height of the building was reduced to around 327 meters. Shortly before construction began, it was announced that the building, including the spire, should be around 415 meters high. The foundation work was completed in 2006 and the concrete structure of the high-rise began to grow in height. Several tower cranes were active on the construction site , and with the help of a hydraulic system they could climb upwards themselves as the height increased. The installation of the glass panes began in spring 2007. In September 2008 the construction site reached the height of the roof. In January 2009 the tip was assembled in several parts using a helicopter, while interior work and work on the glass facade continued until May 2009. The building plot alone cost around 70 million US dollars . The total cost is now given at $ 750 million.

Located directly on the Chicago River near the North Side , the structure can be found in the Chicago skyline between the Aon Center and the John Hancock Center at the confluence of the Chicago River with Lake Michigan (view from Navy Pier to the skyline). The building is completely glazed and thus clearly stands out from the surrounding buildings in the area. The tower has 98 floors and houses 625 apartments with 220 hotel units.
The skyscraper is a total of 423 meters high (357 meters to the roof, the top is included in the height), making it the fourth tallest building in the United States and the second tallest in Chicago . Within the US, the building is surpassed by One World Trade Center, 541 meters high, and 426 meters by 432 Park Avenue (both in New York ), and the 442-meter Willis Tower , after which it ranks second among the tallest buildings in Chicago ranked. Although the Trump Tower is the second tallest building in the city and fourth tallest in the country, in Chicago it is surpassed by the antenna masts of the John Hancock Center (457 meters). The antenna mast of New York's Empire State Building also towers 20 meters above Trump Tower. However, this height measurement is not used for architecture and thus for the official building height, but only used for the collective term building. Therefore, both the Empire State Building and the John Hancock Center are lower than the Trump Tower by the official (structural) height.
The building narrows towards the top with several recesses on different sides. The setbacks of the structure are at heights of 60 meters, 130 meters and 200 meters. The outdoor space gained by the recesses is available as open space for hotel guests and residents. Smaller green spaces and seating were also built there. A little below the roof is another smaller recess. The roof itself is 357 meters above the 98th floor. A 66 meter long spike was installed on the roof. This is often bathed in colored light at night.
Change in altitude
Until November 2009, the height of the tower was given as 415 meters instead of 423 meters. However, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat , the internationally recognized commission for height issues in skyscrapers, decided on November 17, 2009 that the building should not be measured from the front entrance to the top, but from the building entrance on the Chicago River side . This creates a height difference of eight meters. In Chicago, the building remains the second tallest skyscraper after the Willis Tower , but has since surpassed the Jin Mao Tower (421 meters to the top) in Shanghai in the world rankings .
Construction
The building was constructed entirely of reinforced concrete . Currently (as of 2014) the Trump Tower is the tallest reinforced concrete building in the world and has replaced the 390 meter high CITIC Plaza in Guangzhou, China . Although the Burj Khalifa in Dubai , the tallest building in the world at 828 meters, is also made of reinforced concrete up to a height of over 600 meters, it is followed by a steel frame construction. Therefore, the Burj Khalifa is counted among the buildings with a mixed load-bearing structure, even if the concrete structure of the Burj Khalifa is significantly higher than the Trump Tower.

The tower houses a five-star luxury hotel belonging to the Trump International chain. The hotel was part of the Leading Hotels of the World association . It has 218 rooms and 121 suites. The Sixteen restaurant is on the 16th floor.
