Lake Tschebarkul ( Russian озеро Чебаркуль ) is a lake in Chelyabinsk Oblast on the eastern edge of the Urals in Russia .

Lake Tschebarkul is located immediately west of the city of Tschebarkul , which is named after it , about 70 km as the crow flies west-southwest of the Chelyabinsk Oblast center and just under 20 km southeast of the city of Miass . The lake has an area of ​​19.8 km².

The most important tributary is the Kunguruscha from the southwest. The catchment area of the lake covers 169 km². The Kojelga , which leaves the lake in the southeast, flows into the Uwelka after 59 km and is part of the Ob river system .

The railway line Samara  - Chelyabinsk - Omsk , the southern branch of the Trans-Siberian Railway , and a good kilometer south of the lake, the M5 Moscow  - Chelyabinsk highway runs directly along the northern shore of the lake .

Events

On February 15, 2013, the frozen lake was hit by a fragment of a meteorite that created a hole 6 to 10 meters in diameter. The stone meteorite particles found around the hole were 5 to 10 mm in size. The meteorite was named after the nearest town, Chebarkul .

On October 16, 2013, a meteorite fragment weighing approx. 570 kg was recovered from the lake deposits.
