Tschetan, the Indian Boy is a German feature film from 1973.

action

The film is set in the mountains of Montana in 1880 . The German shepherd Jacob Precht has a flock of sheep here. It's called Alaska . Alaska is looking for a place to winter with its herd. The rancher Johnson wants to drive the shepherd with his herd from this piece of earth. Johnson holds the Indian boy Tschetan, who is suspected of being a cattle thief, prisoner. He wants to hang the boy. Alaska rescues the boy and uses him as an assistant shepherd. The silent boy refuses to accept the shepherd and does not follow his orders. Tschetan flees and returns to his home village. Here he finds out that his village has been devastated and all the residents of the tent village are lying dead in the tents. Alaska is looking for the boy and finds him. However, he is filled with hatred of all whites and tries to shoot Alaska . Only very slowly do they begin to trust each other and finally fight together against the rancher Johnson. Johnson is stronger, however, and the two flee together.

Reviews

  • Lexicon of international film : Hark Bohm's directorial debut is a western filmed in Bavaria , which impresses with the quality of its simple, coherent script as well as the calm and carefulness of its staging.
  • Joe Hembus judges that the film is "the first western author's film " and "a film that does not use models from American B-films and myths from German trivial literature , but rather tells a personal story honestly, consistently and very beautifully."
