Tsipouro

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tsipouro ( Greek τσίπουρο ) is a traditional Greek pomace brandy from the Macedonia region . Tsipouro is distilled twice (sometimes three times) from the press residues (rake, Greek: ρακή) of various white grape varieties such as Roditis , Athiri and Assyrtiko . After the first distillation , anise is sometimes used for flavoring. On the Mediterranean island of Crete , this spirit is called tsikoudia or more commonly rakí . The area around Tyrnavos and Thessaly as a whole are important production sites .

A drink that is distilled similarly to rakí or tsipouro, but instead of anise with mastic , a tree resin, is sold as masticha - e.g. B. on the island of Chios . If the wine is missing , the schnapps is simply distilled from figs .
