The wool tulip ( Tulipa lanata ) is a plant from the genus of tulips ( Tulipa ) in the family of Liliaceae (Liliaceae).

features

The woolly tulip is a perennial bulb plant that reaches heights of 40 to 50 centimeters. It may form subterranean runners. The onions are up to 50 centimeters deep in the ground. The onion skins are thinly leathery and covered with long, thin, woolly hair. The bottom sheet measures 16 × 6 centimeters. The bracts measure 5 to 12 × 3 to 6 centimeters. They are pointed, frosted on the underside and colored bright red, with a pale yellow bordered, mostly blunt or edged black basal spot. The anthers are yellow or dark wine red. The pollen is purple.

The flowering time is at the end of May.

Occurrence

The wool tulip occurs in the South Pamir on the rivers Surchan and Kafirnigan as well as in northeast Afghanistan near Kabul and Badachschan on loamy, more rarely also on stony slopes with pistachios , wild pears , roses and wormwood at altitudes of (650) 1200 to 2000 meters in front.

use

The woolly tulip is rarely used as an ornamental plant in borders. It has been in culture since 1886 at the latest.
