The Budapest Street is a 950-meter-long street in the Berlin districts of Tiergarten of the Mitte district and Charlottenburg the district Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf . It represents the connection between the Cornelius Bridge as an extension of the Stülerstrasse at the Großer Tiergarten and Breitscheidplatz . It bears its name to Budapest .

The western part of the street is an extension of Hardenbergstraße . At the level of the ' Bikini-Haus ' on Breitscheidplatz ran - only in an easterly direction - a road tunnel that was filled in in 2006 for urban planning reasons. Budapester Strasse borders the zoological garden , which has one of its two entrances at Olof-Palme-Platz with the elephant gate. The Berlin Aquarium is also located here . A little to the east opposite are the Hotel Palace Berlin and the Europa-Center .

In 1925, what was then Budapester Strasse, which ran between Potsdamer Platz and the Brandenburg Gate , was renamed Friedrich-Ebert-Strasse (now Ebertstrasse) . In order not to make the name disappear without replacement, the part of Kurfürstendamm located northeast of the Memorial Church was renamed Budapester Strasse on April 22, 1925. On February 5, 1965, a section of Kurfürstenstrasse between Budapester Strasse and Nürnberger Strasse was included.

Originally, Budapester Straße ran directly parallel to the border of the zoo with the elephant gate and the aquarium (not yet restored at the time) before it was swiveled in the 1980s. The pivoting resulted in Olof-Palme-Platz. The eastern part of the street is dominated by the Hotel InterContinental Berlin , which, with its chessboard-like facade, represents a landmark on the Landwehr Canal that runs here from afar .

The Eden Hotel was at the historic address Kurfürstendamm 246/247 on the triangle Budapester Strasse / Kurfürstenstrasse / Nürnberger Strasse opposite the aquarium . After the Kurfürstendamm section was renamed Budapester Strasse, the address was Budapester Strasse 35.

Budapester Strasse tunnel

At the end of the 1950s, Breitscheidplatz was redesigned to make it suitable for cars. The former roundabout around the Gedächtniskirche was removed (1956–1960), and instead a connection was established from the corner of Tauentzienstrasse / Kudamm to the north to the Bikinihaus - the so-called "buckle" between the Gedächtniskirche and Europa-Center (built 1963–65). From this buckle you could now turn east into Budapester Strasse towards Potsdamer Platz and westwards towards Hardenbergstrasse. Since the connection to the west was much more important for the divided city, an intersection-free turn to the west was planned (1959 at the latest).

Turning Buckle Tunnel (June 1978)

For this purpose an underpass was built along Budapester Straße, with which the buckle could only be passed eastwards. At the time of construction, it was usually called the road tunnel at Breitscheidplatz or the road tunnel at the Memorial Church , even if it is factually an underpass that was 230 meters long with ramps. When turning right from the west of Budapester Straße into the buckle, it was easy to take the right-hand lanes, while the left-hand lanes sank into the trough. A left turn to the west from the buckle into Budapester Strasse crossed the trough over a short lid. The journey from the east from Budapester Strasse remained above ground in all respects - only one two-lane carriageway had been lowered.

The road layout did not last long. In 1978, an improvement in the use of space and the quality of stay on Breitscheidplatz began: the road connection in front of the Europa-Center was closed and replaced by a pedestrian area, so that the square along Tauentzienstrasse has been continuously accessible since then. The tunnel, however, remained - raised beds were created in the old turning lanes. The curiosity arose that pedestrians from the Breitscheidplatz pedestrian zone to the Bikinihaus crossed the east-facing lane and had to cross the west-facing lane at a traffic light.

The ramps of the tunnel were now an unnecessary obstacle. Nobody was willing to raise the funds to fill the tunnel. In 2002 the bikini house was sold and the investor suggested closing the underpass. He would pay for the lid. This was argued about in the following years. So there was the idea of completely covering the tunnel and using the cavity. The planning received a further impetus when the new owner of the Schimmelpfeng house decided to demolish it in 2004, which had been planned by the Senate since 1999. A redesign of the western part of Budapester Strasse was now imperative.

Finally it was decided to fill the trough with soil. For this purpose, the now so-called Budapester Strasse tunnel was closed from May 2005 , and an above-ground carriageway was opened in June 2006. The costs were shared between the residents and the city - the Zoobogen owner Bayerische Immobilien AG paid 1.1 million euros, and the State of Berlin contributed 500,000 euros. However, this did not include the additional costs of 1.6 million for the redesign of Breitscheidplatz, so that the total amount of the construction work amounted to 3.2 million euros. The Schimmelpfeng house was finally demolished in 2009, completing the redesign.
