The Cornelius Bridge is a road bridge built in the 19th century over the Landwehr Canal at canal kilometer 2.65. It connects Corneliusstrasse with the Katharina-Heinroth-Ufer / Lützowufer street in the Tiergarten district of Berlin . The bridge structure is named after the painter Peter von Cornelius . Due to severe war damage, it was rebuilt from concrete until 1955.

Location and history

The Cornelius Bridge, 1960

The Thiergarten Aktienbauverein had a stone arch bridge built in 1874/1875 based on a design by the architect Emil Boethke to cross the Stülerstraße / Budapester Straße (in the 19th century a section of the Kurfürstendamm ) over the Landwehr Canal . The building association had acquired building plots on the canal and wanted to better connect the residential buildings planned here to the Berlin road network with a bridge. However, the construction costs of the bridge were higher than originally estimated, so that the Aktienbauverein had to file for bankruptcy. The city of Berlin now became the owner of the bridge.

In 1900 the bridge was widened to 19 meters. One year after its completion, the building was named after the painter Peter von Cornelius, who had helped design the Berlin Cathedral . This bridge was destroyed at the end of the Second World War and had to be removed. It was not until 1954/55 that the Berlin Senate decided to rebuild a bridge at this point. It was as reinforced concrete - arch bridge designed and modeled in shape to the old bridge.

The construction

Brief description

The slightly curved bridge with its overhead carriageway has its abutments in the sloping walls of the Landwehr Canal. The passage width for shipping is 14 meters. The bridge railing is designed as an iron frame work, painted with a greenish protective color and only bears the name of the bridge and a field with the year of construction 1954/55 as decoration. The bridge has a six-lane slab track and wide footpaths on both sides.

Health check

In 2006 and 2007, random inspections revealed numerous damage to the walls of the Landwehr Canal, including around the Cornelius Bridge. The damaging processes were initially halted in small provisional steps and the damage was eliminated depending on the availability of funds. In the fall of 2010, diving investigations took place around the Cornelius Bridge because an unspecified underwater obstacle on the sheet pile wall had been reported. The divers from the Berlin Waterways and Shipping Authority (WSA) found fragments of the earlier structure and removed them. A simultaneous appraisal of the abutments and neighboring technical systems did not reveal any further damage.

The trees around the Cornelius Bridge

Already around 1884 the southern bank area (Lützowufer) on both sides of the Cornelius Bridge was planted with horse chestnuts , elms and plane trees, willows followed later. The condition of the trees along the canal was examined by a landscape architects' office in 1991 and the Senate was given appropriate conclusions. However, no activities have been carried out.

Some of the old trees had sloped sharply towards the end of the millennium because of loose canal walls and should be felled. Environmentalists had enforced that the actually healthy trees were secured with wire ropes and concrete blocks. After the entire bank area could be secured with new sheet pile walls and embankments in the long term until spring 2011, workers removed the tree connections on April 18, 2011.

In the vicinity of the bridge

The Korean Embassy is located here (on the north bank of the canal) and a larger hotel complex (on the south bank). The German Foundation for International Development is based directly on Corneliusstrasse. The Riedel shipping company also has a starting point for excursions on the bridge.
