The Köthener Bridge is a road bridge in the Berlin-Kreuzberg district , completed in 1910 , which leads Köthener Straße from Reichpietschufer / Halleschen Ufer to Schöneberger Ufer over the Landwehr Canal.

location

It is located at kilometer 4.70 of the canal. Twenty meters above the road bridge at the Mendelssohn-Bartholdy-Park underground station that runs diagonally over the Landwehr Canal, the elevated railway bridge of underground line 2 runs parallel . The railing of the Köthener Bridge connects directly to a pillar of the underground bridge on one side. There are three lanes on the bridge, plus a cycle lane, and walkways around 3.90 m wide on both sides.

Building history

The iron arch construction with a span of 20.10 m was built in 1910 west of the Schöneberg harbor according to designs by Arno Körnig and Friedrich Krause . Both have already built other bridges in the Berlin area, such as the Greifenhagener Brücke . The structure described here has been named after the city of Köthen since its completion on June 1, 1910 . It is a riveted double lower arch bridge with eleven juxtaposed iron arches in a truss structure . The deck slab is located above it. The abutments on the banks are made of bricks and natural stones.

Repair of the elevated railway bridge on Köthener Strasse in 1947

The Köthener Bridge was at least badly damaged towards the end of the Second World War . This is indicated by a picture of the completely destroyed elevated railway bridge located close by, as well as the history of the waterways office, which says:

“16 of the 28 road and pedestrian bridges and 3 of the 7 railway bridges were destroyed. There was great bomb damage in the area ... "

Finally, concrete evidence of the “destroyed Köthener bridge” is provided by a representation of the Steglitz home association.

The bridge has been a listed building since the 1980s . The construction had already suffered a lot of rust in the almost 100 years of its existence, as detailed photos show. In the summer of 2002 , the Senate Department for Urban Development had the corrosion protection of the bridge carried out by Scadock & Hofmann from Lauchhammer with special coatings from Sika . All iron materials were given a new base coat of "Icosit" (zinc dust in epoxy resin), over which there were three different top coats with zinc sulfate and iron mica in epoxy resin.

In 2005 there was a design competition that included the newly planned Tilla-Durieux Bridge along with the banks to the neighboring canal crossings George C. Marshall Bridge and Köthener Bridge . A specific change in the area around the Köthener Bridge cannot be derived from the publications.

Railing with lettering

The iron parts of the bridge are protected over the protective coating with green and gray lacquer, which particularly shows off the decorative parts of the cast iron railing , which are executed in Art Nouveau style . Design elements are the lettering "Koethener Bruecke" and square bronze reliefs on both sides . One panel shows a running bear, the other a deer. Stylized lion heads with a grim and friendly expression as well as plants and shell motifs surround the reliefs. In addition, the stone supports contain depictions of all kinds of reptiles.

Newsworthy

In November 1995, very close to the Köthener Bridge, a driver broke through the railing with his vehicle and got into the Landwehr Canal. He could save himself. The German Museum of Technology Berlin is located near the bridge . A special investigation by the Berlin police into accidents with pedestrians in 2008 showed no increased risk for the Köthener bridge.
