PIN CODE. Friends of the Pinakothek der Moderne eV is a support association with more than 800 members. The primary goal of the association is to promote the four museums in the Pinakothek der Moderne and the Museum Brandhorst in Munich . PIN has been supporting the Modern Art Collection and the State Graphic Collection since 1965 with acquisitions, exhibitions and projects. Since 2012, the Neue Sammlung - The International Design Museum and the Architekturmuseum der TUM have also been funded, and thus all museums that are located under the umbrella of the Pinakothek der Moderne. In 2016, the Brandhorst Museum was one of the association's funding goals. With a funding volume in the high six-digit range, PIN. a contribution to the support of exhibition and mediation projects as well as acquisition goals.

History, goal setting and activities

The friends' association was founded in 1965 under the name Galerie-Verein by art lovers, including Franz Herzog von Bayern and the collectors and patrons Cristof Engelhorn, Walter Bareiss and Alfred Winterstein. Since then, the association has acquired over a thousand works of art from the 20th and 21st centuries that have been given to the Bavarian State Painting Collections on permanent loan. The purchases include works by Francis Bacon , Georg Baselitz , Joseph Beuys , Georges Braque , Wassily Kandinsky , Neo Rauch , Gerhard Richter , Cy Twombly and Andy Warhol as well as numerous other works by contemporary artists.

One of the activities of the friends' association is the annual PIN festival with charity auction, which has been held since 2003. Collectors, gallery owners and artists auction works of art here in order to donate the proceeds to the museum. In this way, works by Candida Höfer and Björn Melhus (2003), Peter Doig (2004), Arnulf Rainer (2005), Tadeusz Kantor (2006), Luc Tuymans (2007), Philip Guston (2008), Zoe Leonard ( 2009), Neo Rauch and Wade Guyton , Ellsworth Kelly , Paul Pfeiffer , Lewis Baltz (2011) and Georg Baselitz (2012), Paul Klee (2015), Franz Erhard Walther (2017) and many other important artists.

In addition to promoting modernity and the post-war avant-garde, PIN's main focus is on. with the aim of discovering, discussing and acquiring contemporary art . In addition to the acquisitions, exhibitions and educational projects by the two houses are also funded.

PIN offers its members. a program with over 60 lectures, trips, exhibition previews and curator tours, artist talks, gallery tours and studio visits every year.

PIN.Young Circle

In the summer of 2011, the PIN.Young Circle for young art lovers up to the age of 40 was launched with its own program. Since then the young Freundeskreis u. a. Works by Franka Kaßner, Kathrin Sonntag, Natalie Czech, Florian Auer, Laure Prouvost and most recently the VR sports equipment ICAROS for the collections of the museums under the roof of the Pinakothek der Moderne.

Art period

PIN CODE. was co-initiator of the studio grant "art period", which was awarded in cooperation with Südhausbau . From 2005 to 2014 a. PIN.occhio

The supported art education program PIN.occhio is aimed at socially disadvantaged after-school children between the ages of six and twelve. The creative encounter with art is intended to promote the personal development of the children and introduce them to the art museum as a place of experience and learning.

PIN.X

PIN.X enables young people from the age of 10 to enter the museum and thus access to art, education and culture. The free projects and workshops combine the use of digital media with a real visit to the museum, impart age-appropriate knowledge to secondary and secondary school students and illustrate works of art in the museum's extraordinary learning environment. PIN.X is an initiative of the Pinakothek der Moderne Foundation, PIN., The Museum Pedagogical Center and the Palais Pinakothek and is supported by the Bavarian State Ministry for Education and Culture.

Club structure

The business of the association in Munich is managed by an honorary board, the members of which are elected for three years at the general assembly. Dorothée Wahl has been CEO of PIN since 2016. Katharina Freifrau von Perfall previously held this office from 2010. A board of trustees, which includes representatives from business, industry and patronage, is available to advise the board.
