The Großer Busch tunnel is a 275-meter-long road tunnel on the 535 federal motorway in the Dornap district of Wuppertal . The route was as up to 2008 Federal Road 224n reported.

Until the tunnel was opened in 1990, the motorway , coming from the Sonnborner Kreuz , ended at the Wuppertal-Dornap junction (connection to federal highway 7 ). The construction of the tunnel in 1989/90 took place in an open design , in which initially an open pit was created, which was then filled in again. The two tunnel tubes, which run through the 26-hectare forest area Im Großer Busch , from which it is named, are each 12.5 meters wide. The construction costs amounted to 22 million DM . In the course of the tunnel upgrade program of the State Office for Road Construction NRW , the tunnel was to be upgraded in accordance with the latest safety requirements. Preparations began in 2007. The work was successfully completed and the tunnel was thus adapted to the 2006 standard of the RABT (guidelines for the equipment and operation of road tunnels).

The open pit during construction in Massenkalk - rock was, was an ideal opportunity for the paleontology -Research. It produced abundant finds and essential new knowledge about the processes in the Mississippium (also known as the Lower Carboniferous ) in this region. The evaluations of the finds extended over several years.
