Wagenloadstrasse tunnel is a road tunnel in Stuttgart - Mitte , which is partly in the planning phase. It is divided into three sections, two of which have already been completed and serve to develop the Europaviertel .

history

The Wagenladungsstraße was a street built parallel to Bahnhof-Straße (today: Heilbronner Straße ) for the loading of freight wagons on the grounds of the Stuttgart freight yard . This freight yard, north of Stuttgart Central Station , was closed in the 1980s. In 1997, in the framework plan for Stuttgart 21, a proposal for the future use of the district was published, in which the wagonload road was intended as a route to the construction sites around Stuttgart 21 . With the implementation of the urban planning concept, the railway facilities were dismantled and with the construction of the Europaviertel , the southern part of the wagonload road was covered from 1990 onwards. The northern part was demolished and built over in construction fields 4, 5, 6 and 7.

North tunnel

The northern section begins on Wolframstrasse, passes under Mailänder Platz and then branches into two branches. To the north, a tunnel leads under the Milaneo shopping center , which is used for deliveries. To the south, the tunnel forms a connection to construction site 5 and from there to the southern section of the wagonload road tunnel. The tunnel also serves to develop the underground car park of the shopping center and the access to the hotel in Milaneo. In 2013, a traffic light-controlled intersection was built on Wolframstrasse, where the tunnel is linked to the Cityring Stuttgart.

In November 2011, DB Services Immobilien GmbH put out a tender for the first 390-meter-long section to be constructed using the cut-and-cover method and awarded the contract in July 2012. Construction of the northern truckload tunnel began in May 2012 and the first section went into operation in October 2014.

South tunnel

The older, southern wagonload road tunnel begins at Kurt-Georg-Kiesinger-Platz west of the main train station and ends in construction site 4 of the Europaviertel . Its length is about 330 meters.

The oldest section is a 50 meter long junction directly at the southern entrance, which is used to cross under Heilbronner Straße. This was opened to road traffic at the end of the 1970s, in the course of the construction of the tram tunnel below Heilbronner Strasse. However, due to construction work at the Stuttgart 21 underground station, it is only accessible to construction vehicles until further notice. Template: future / in 2 yearsSince 2014, the crossing under has been used as a logistics road to enable construction vehicles from the north end of the underground station to cross under Heilbronner Strasse, as from there they have a connection to the construction road to the north station without affecting public road traffic. As the access to the actual branch of the tunnel for the delivery of the buildings above is no longer guaranteed, an asphalt ramp was built in construction site 4 to the northern entrance to the tunnel.

Another section was covered from 1990 to 1994 by the building of the headquarters of the Sparda Bank , and from 2002 to 2004 with the construction of further LBBW office buildings .

Connector

The planned connection piece below the construction areas 4 and 5 of the Europaviertel is intended to guarantee a connection between the main station and the portal on Wolframstraße running completely in the tunnel. This is expected to be put into operation with the buildings on the corresponding construction fields.
