SuperTuxKart , or STK for short, is a free arcade racing game similar to Mario Kart ( Remake ). It runs on Linux , macOS , Windows and other operating systems. The latest version is 1.1 from January 5th, 2020. The main developers are Joerg Henrichs and Marianne Gagnon. SuperTuxKart is developed in the programming language C ++ .

Gameplay

The aim of the game is to win races against up to four human players in split-screen mode (via network also more players) or against computer-controlled opponents. Players can pick up a variety of power-ups in the form of gift packages for advantage and must avoid obstacles. The majority of game characters are mascots from the free software ecosystem , such as: B. Tux ( Linux kernel ), Wilber ( GIMP ) or Suzanne ( Blender ). In addition to Grand Prix races and the multiplayer mode, SuperTuxKart offers various game modes . In addition to the regular game mode, there is also a time trial mode in which items were dispensed with, so that only the driving talent is important. In the game mode “Follow the Leader”, one driver is arbitrarily chosen as the leader (with the exception of the player's driver), and everyone else follows him. After a certain time, the last driver in the row or the driver who drove before the leader will be eliminated. Then a new countdown is reactivated. In the multiplayer mode there is also an arena competition in which the participating drivers have to destroy each other, as well as a soccer mode in which two teams have to throw a giant soccer ball into the opposing goal.

history

SuperTuxKart was created in 2004 as an attempt to complete the unfinished game TuxKart . This attempt failed because of disputes between the developers, which is why the game was not developed further until 2006. That year Joerg Henrichs took over the development and published a first version in September 2006. Today STK uses the Irrlicht -Engine for the graphics and OpenAL for the sound output. From version 0.7.2 it is possible to download new race tracks and characters via an add-on manager integrated in the game . In 2013 and 2014 the project took part in the Google Summer of Code with four and five participants respectively. On January 17, 2014, the migration of the source code to GitHub was publicly completed. On May 5th, 2014 it was announced that the next version of the game would have a new game engine with revised, more modern graphics. Version 0.9 was released on April 21, 2015. The most noticeable innovation is the revised and modern looking graphics. For this purpose, we switched to the Antarctica graphics engine , which, however, is also based on the will-o'-the-wisp engine used in earlier versions. In addition, pre-implementations for online functions were built in, but these have not yet reached their final extent. In addition, downward compatibility with older add-ons has been abandoned. On October 21, 2015, version 0.9.1 was updated with numerous bug fixes and minor improvements. Version 1.0, released on April 20, 2019, now also includes a multiplayer mode for the Internet and local networks.
