Tveit is a village and a former municipality in Fylke Vest-Agder in Norway. Today it belongs to the municipality of Kristiansand in Sørlandet . Kristiansand Airport is in Tveit . Tveit is located on the east side of the Tovdalselva River - also known as Topdalselva. Kristiansand city center is about 18 km south-west. The population is 1,418 (as of 2009). The size is 1.35 km², which means 1050 inhabitants per square kilometer. The highest point is 1,011 m. The postcode is 4658 Tveit.

Surname

The municipality - originally a parish - was named after the old Tveit farm ( Old Norse : Þveit), as the first church was located there. The name is identical to the word "Þveit", which means something like "a cleared area in the middle of the forest". The name changed over the centuries from Tved (1801), Thvet (1865) and Tveid (1900) to today's Tveit.

Tveit was founded as a municipality on January 1, 1838 (see Formannskapsdistrikt ). On January 1, 1965, the municipalities of Tveit, Oddernes , Randesund and Kristiansand were merged into one larger municipality.

Known residents

The ancestors of the former US Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey (1911–1978) came from Tveit. In the church of Tveit there is a plaque commemorating Humprey's visit.

Sports facilities

In Tveit there is a ski center and the football club Tveit IL. For sport fishing is possible on Tovdalselva river salmon fishing.
