Tylecodon paniculatus is a species of the genus Tylecodon in the family of thick-leaf plants (Crassulaceae).

description

Tylecodon paniculatus grows as an upright, robust and thick-stemmed shrub with a stature height of up to 2.5 meters. The main trunk reaches a diameter of about 40 centimeters. The plants are richly branched and form a rounded crown. The smooth bark peels off in semi-translucent, yellowish-brown stripes, exposing the green, fleshy trunk. The roots are fibrous. The soft-fleshed and brittle shoots have a grayish green bark when they are young. The ascending-spreading leaves are flat to somewhat runny. In young plants they can be densely hairy, otherwise they are bare. The elliptical, ovate to lanceolate, grass-green and rarely bluish leaf blade is 5 to 9 centimeters long and 2 to 4 centimeters wide. Their edge is entire and occasionally wavy. The blade is wedge-shaped at the base and rounded to blunt at the tip. At the tip of the shoot there are triangular, 3 millimeter long and 2 millimeter wide leaf rudiments that quickly turn brown and dry up.

The inflorescences form thyrses up to 40 centimeters long with 3 to 6 monochasia . The peduncle is reddish. The bracts are 15 to 20 millimeters long and 3 to 5 millimeters wide. The flowers are spread out to nodding. Its tubular, orange-yellow to red flower tube has a diameter of 8 millimeters and a length of up to 20 millimeters. The outside of the flower tube is hairy or bald. The corolla lobes are initially expanded and later bent back.

Systematics and distribution

Tylecodon paniculatus is widespread in southern Namibia and in the South African province of Northern Cape in the winter rain areas of the succulent caroo. The first description as Cotyledon paniculata was made in 1782 by Carl von Linné's son . Helmut Richard Tölken placed the species in the genus Tylecodon in 1978 .
