history

Plaza de Mayo underground station, 1913
In 1953, five to seven people were killed in a bomb attack on supporters of President Perón in Plaza de Mayo (and the subway station)

Plaza de Mayo Metro Station is part of the opening section of the first Buenos Aires metro line between Plaza de Mayo and Plaza Miserere . As is customary in Buenos Aires, the end of the line was a central platform with exits at both ends. The walls are tiled in white to this day, and the metal supports are colored light blue. The trains end right at the platform at a buffer stop.

When the station opened and before that, the square in front of the president's seat of government was always one of the most important places in the city of Buenos Aires and Argentina. Numerous protests, demonstrations and gatherings have taken place there throughout Argentina's history. In 1953, during a speech given by President Perón to members of the CGT trade union , a bomb exploded, killing between five and seven people and causing serious damage to the subway station.

Something similar happened two years later on June 16, 1955 when the Plaza de Mayo was bombed - at the same time Perón also gave a speech to his followers. This time, too, the subway station was damaged. At the southern exit there is still a commemorative plaque in memory of the victims of the massacre.

In 1997 the metro station was classified as a national historical monument (monumento histórico nacional) .
