Location and structure

The station is one and a half times lower and has a staircase to Karl-Marx-Allee at both ends. The platform has a simple middle row of columns. The station is designed very similarly to the other stations on this line, which opened in 1930. The station's color code is pink.

The work of art Travelers from Another Time , consisting of several sculptures, is installed on the platform of the underground station . It was made by young people from the Oranienburg correctional facility under the supervision of the artist Ralf Schade and handed over to the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) on December 15, 2003 .

On December 21, 1930, the then line E was opened with the Schillingstrasse station. Once designed in the uniform type of the railway line with a distribution floor at both exits and, as usual for this line, with comfortable stairs on both sides to the sidewalks of what was then Frankfurter Strasse, the station caused difficulties in the late 1950s with the redesign of the north-western end of the then Stalinallee between Strausberger Platz and Alexanderplatz. This part of the street was completely rebuilt around 1960 and was then modern; the underground station remained closed during this work from March 31, 1959 to June 2, 1960. The road was considerably widened, the wide green strip on the northern side that otherwise existed in the former Stalinallee was omitted in favor of a wider route for road traffic to Alexanderplatz, which was to be completely redesigned in the following years. The stairs of the underground station were in the way. On the eastern side of the station, the distribution floor was replaced by a longer pedestrian tunnel that connected the two sides of the street and also served as an entrance for the subway. On the northern side of the east exit, a wide staircase was now led across the roadway onto the sidewalk and, on the opposite side, led out concealed in one of the new flat buildings facing Schillingstrasse. This pedestrian tunnel was included in the modernization and designed with photos of the street and the nearby Alexanderplatz from the construction period around 1960 and the years that followed. A large label on the new paneling explains the history of the station. The western exits, on the other hand, were closed due to the war in 1945 and were built up around 1970. They were not replaced, probably also because of the nearby Alexanderplatz station , which was easier to reach from 1970 through a pedestrian tunnel, but could not be reached directly from the Schillingstrasse underground station.

In 2003, the Alexanderplatz - Frankfurter Allee section was extensively renovated. In addition to the superstructure of the line, the stations were also extensively renovated and the old tiles replaced with new enamelled steel plates. The station was given tiles that were supposed to remind of the original color. The old asphalt surface of the platform was also replaced by granite slabs . The north-western entrance was opened again. An extension of the mezzanine to the other side of the street was not made.

The restoration of the stairs was carried out two years later.

An elevator went into operation at the end of 2013, so that the platform has been barrier-free ever since .

Connection

The underground station is served exclusively by the U5 line and the BVG night bus line N5, which has a similar route . There are no transfer options to other local public transport lines .
