uMlalazi (also Umlalazi ; English uMlalazi Local Municipality ) is a municipality in the South African district of King Cetshwayo in the province of KwaZulu-Natal . The name of the community can be derived from the isiZulu word lalazi (German "sharpen"). The administrative seat of the municipality is Eshowe . Mzaneno Magwaza is the mayor.

The parish covers an area of ​​approximately 2300 square kilometers. Thus uMlalazi is one of the largest municipalities in South Africa.

The area of ​​the municipality is rural. The main places are Eshowe, KwaGingindlovu and Mtunzini . The uMlalazi river flows through the territory of the municipality. Furthermore, the Eshlazi Reservoir and the Phobane Lake are located in uMlalazi.

Since the community has the highest amount of rainfall in South Africa, the region is ideal for growing sugar cane and citrus fruits.

In 2011 the community had 213,601 inhabitants. 97.1% of these were black, 1.5% white, 0.7% Indian or Asian and 0.6% colored .

First language was 91.9% isiZulu , 3.5% English, 1.3% isiNdebele and 0.9 % Afrikaans .
