uMfolozi ( English uMfolozi Local Municipality , formerly Mbonambi Local Municipality ) is a municipality in the South African district of King Cetshwayo in the province of KwaZulu-Natal . The administrative center of the municipality is in KwaMbonambi . The ANC has the majority in the local council.

In 2011 the community had 122,889 inhabitants according to the census. At that time it covered an area of 1210 square kilometers. The name of the community comes from the name of an impi from Shaka .

geography

uMfolozi is located in the east of the province north of Richards Bay . It is located south of the Big Five Hlabisa and Mtubatuba communities and the former Umkhanyakude DMA . The northern border of the municipality is formed by the Mfolozi and Msunduzi rivers . In the south the municipality of uMhlathuze borders on uMfolozi.

In addition to Mfolozi and Msunduzi, the rivers Mavuya , Nsezi and Mvamanzi also flow through the municipality. Lakes are Nhlabane Lake in the east and Teza in the north.

Other places in the municipality besides KwaMbonambi are Dondotsha , eSitheza and Mposa .

In 2016, parts of the Ntambanana community came to uMfolozi.

economy

The community consists largely of rural areas administered by the Ingonyama Trust . However , there is a good connection to economic centers in the area via the national road N2 , which runs through the middle of the municipality; for example Richards Bay and Empangeni . Mbonambi also borders the iSimangaliso Wetland Park , which attracts many tourists.

The Owen Sithole College of Agriculture , an agricultural school, is part of the community.

Except for the N2, the road conditions are rather bad. Many paths are not asphalted and therefore hardly passable in the rainy season. The water supply in the community is also poor. Other problems in the community are the low level of education and high unemployment. 50 percent of the population never even finished elementary school; 60 percent of those able to work are unemployed.

The economy in uMfolozi relies on agriculture, mining and tourism. Mainly sugar cane and timber are grown. The largest employers are Richards Bay Minerals , Mondi , SAFCOL and Sappi . The difficulty in the agricultural use of large areas lies in the traditional settlement structure, which does not allow large-scale use of the land.
