City of uMhlathuze ( English City of uMhlathuze Local Municipality , abbreviated CoU ) is a municipality in the South African district of King Cetshwayo in the province of KwaZulu-Natal . The municipality's administrative headquarters are in Richards Bay . Zakhele Amos Mnqayi is the mayor. The ANC has the majority in the local council.

In 2016, part of the dissolved Ntambanana municipality was integrated into the municipality.

In 2011 the community had 334,459 inhabitants. It covers an area of ​​793 square kilometers. The community name is derived from a compound isiZulu term. Mhlati means "jaw" (body part) and thuzi means "does not chew". The community is named after the river of the same name, in which many crocodiles are said to have lived in the past. As a result, he was shunned by locals.

uMhlatuze is located on the Indian Ocean . In the north the municipality borders on uMfolozi and in the south on uMlalazi . The national road N2 runs along the north-south axis through the municipality; thus a connection to the provincial transport network is guaranteed. The regional road R102 runs parallel to the N2 . From the coast from the west, the R34 runs at the height of Empangeni and thus connects the municipality to the hinterland.

The rivers Mhlatuze , Mlalazi , Nseleni , Okula and Nsezi flow through the municipality. The Mhlatuze Lagoon and the Mzingazi , Cubhu , Mpangeni and Nsezi lakes are also located in uMhlatuze.
