As a member of the Bundestag, he met with other members of the AfD parliamentary group in March 2018 and November 2019 with representatives of the Assad regime in Syria , where he called for an end to EU sanctions. The meetings sparked harsh criticism across all parties.

Controversy

Hemmelgarn is by journalists Julia Rathcke and Thomas Reisener ( Rheinische Post ) of Reichsbürgergesetz associated scene; Hemmelgarn, on the other hand, denies the allegations with the words that he is “fully” behind the Basic Law. Hemmelgarn failed in court when attempting to take action against this Rheinische Post article . The Office for the Protection of the Constitution of North Rhine-Westphalia responded to the report that it did not comment on personal data.

The social scientist Alexander Häusler stated in a report by Frontal21 in 2018 : "With Mr. Hemmelgarn, one can assume that there are significant interfaces to the worldview of the Reich citizens." The background to this is the “alternative knowledge congresses”, co-organized by Hemmelgarn, of the AfD-affiliated association for the promotion of political dialogue , which are regarded as network meetings for conspiracy theories and Reich citizenship ideology.

In May 2019 it became known that Hemmelgarn, together with other AfD MPs - contrary to current regulations - had used a diplomatic passport for a private trip to the Crimea , annexed by Russia .

Hemmelgarn came into a crossfire of public criticism after he cynically expressed himself on Twitter following the collision of two Eurofighters in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (June 2019).

In November 2019, Hemmelgarn attracted attention by participating in a smear campaign against the mayor of Hanover , Belit Onay , when he incorrectly suggested in a tweet that there had been street parties with moon star after his election .
