Udo Ungar (born January 31, 1964 in Geilenkirchen ) is a German photographer and designer .

Life

Udo Ungar grew up in Baesweiler near Aachen . In his parents' architecture office and through contact with artists such as Charlotte and Sepp Hürten , Herbert Krings and Helmut Lieblang , he got to know creative activities early on and dealt with photography, painting, design and graphics. Design prototypes for guitars and basses date from this time.

From 1987 to 1992 Udo Ungar studied communication design at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences . In the basic course, the designers were trained in the areas of photography / film, graphics and objects. In his main course Udo Ungar studied photo journalism with Professor Adolf Clemens . At the same time, he worked as a freelance photographer with fellow students in the fields of advertising and architecture and took on the position of master studio in a Dortmund advertising agency. In the course of this activity he traveled all over the GDR after the fall of the Berlin Wall and documented the conditions in numerous VEBs and communities.

He chose his diploma topic on the basis of the experiences from his travels to the GDR after the fall of the Berlin Wall and because of his family background. On four trips in 1991/92 he photographed the German minority in Romania and the Transylvanian Saxons who had already emigrated to Germany and photographed the question: “ Transylvania - 850 years of Germans in Romania. The end of a culture? "In this work he was commissioned by the Transylvania Institute at Castle Horneck in Gundelsheim . The result was an extensive work of over 12,000 recordings, some of which were of historical value. The thesis was presented as an exhibition in the Heroldstrasse studio in Dortmund .

From 1994 to 2003, Ungar ran an advertising agency in Dortmund, and from 1996–98 taught as a lecturer in electronic image processing at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences. In the meantime, he taught at various educational institutes and trained media designers in his own company. In 2004 Udo Ungar moved his residence to Newel near Trier in the southern Eifel and works as a freelancer in photography, public relations , architecture design / visualization and modern media.

The CD-ROM on the city history of Dortmund was created in 2000 in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Schilp and Dr. Högl created by the Dortmund City Archives as a teaching aid for history lessons. In cooperation with Lache and the Bochum City Archives on behalf of LEG , the CD-ROM Residential and Business Park Holland was published in 1999 on the history of the Holland colliery in Bochum. The diploma thesis was published in early 2001 as an interactive CD-ROM with an accompanying book under the title “Transylvania - the end of a culture?”.

In recent years, photographic works have been published as illustrated books and as e-books . A book shows a review of portraits from Romania, which were taken in 1991/92 outside of the diploma series. All portraits were photographed analogue and are available as black and white photos. At the beginning of 2013 a book was published with photos from the personal environment under the title “A Greeting from Germany”, in which the iPhone was used as a filter for viewing everyday life.
