Ugo De Censi Scarafoni SDB (born January 26, 1924 in Polaggia, Berbenno di Valtellina , Italy ; † December 2, 2018 in Lima , Peru ) was a Catholic religious .  

Life

Ugo De Censi joined the religious order of the Salesians of Don Bosco and studied Catholic theology and political science . On March 8, 1951, he was ordained a priest in the Milan Cathedral by Alfredo Ildefonso Cardinal Schuster OSB . For almost twenty years he worked in a Salesian school in Arese in the province of Milan.

In 1965 he took part in Rome on the 19th General Chapter of the Salesians and dealt with missionary work in Latin America. From 1967 he was committed to building a youth center in Poxoréo , Brazil , as a result of which he founded the aid organization Operazione Mato Grosso (OMG). In 1976 he left Italy and became a pastor in Chacas ( Territorial Prelature Huari ) in the Peruvian highland province of Ancash . In 1979 he founded a school for wood carving in the slums to offer the young people training, accommodation and food. He also founded the Oratorio delle Ande to give children and young people with internships opportunities for further development. In 1994 he was the initiator of the establishment of the Assumption Hospital , which was mainly financed by donations from the Operazione Mato Grosso from the Archdiocese of Milan and inaugurated by Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini . He then founded houses for abandoned and orphaned children in Peru, including in Chuquibambilla and Nuevo Chimbote, and initiated numerous infrastructure projects.
