Ugo Pellis

Ugo Pellis (born October 9, 1882 in Fiumicello , † July 17, 1943 in Gorizia ) was an Italian Romance scholar , dialectologist and photographer.

life and work

Pellis studied with Theodor Gartner at Innsbruck University and was a high school teacher for German in Capodistria and Trieste . In 1919 he was one of the founding members of the Società Filologica Friulana (Philological Society of Friuli ) and was its chairman from 1920 to 1923.

In 1925 he was given leave of absence and until 1942 he assumed the function of sole dialectological explorer in field research in preparation for the Italian language atlas planned with Matteo Giulio Bartoli . He left behind extensive materials including a collection of photos (Fondo Fotografico Pellis) that was created at the same time. The questionnaire used by Pellis was published in 5 volumes from 1971 to 1981, the linguistic atlas Atlante linguistico italiano based on it has been published since 1995 (eight volumes so far).

The magazine Ce fastu? Pellis dedicated a memorial to the Società Filologica Friulana in 1943.
