Ugolino Lorenzetti

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ugolino Lorenzetti is an emergency name around which a number of pictures in the history of art have been grouped, which were painted in Siena in the 14th century . The painter of the works was not known by name, but his style followed that of the painters Ugolino da Siena (active around 1317) and Pietro Lorenzetti (* around 1300; † around 1348), who worked in Siena . So parts of their names were connected to the emergency name. Like the two painters, Ugolino Lorenzetti follows the tradition of Duccio di Buoninsegna (* around 1255, † around 1319) and the School of Siena .

Various identifications have been suggested in order to give the unknown artist a true name. For example, after comparing styles, it was suggested that some of his pictures were more likely by Bartolo di Fredi . It was also proposed to remove some of the pictures from the catalog raisonné or to add others and assign them to other artists such as the master of Ovile . Every now and then new pictures were assigned to a Ugolino Lorenzetti.

According to the current state of research, most of the pictures formerly grouped around the emergency name Ugolino Lorenzetti are now assigned to the catalog of works by the painter Bartolomeo Bulgarini , who is known by name and can be traced back to Siena between 1337 and 1378. However, since this is not completely undisputed, the name Ugolino Lorenzetti is still used in parts of the professional world and in part also in more recent catalogs of works of art.

The pictures originally assigned to Ugolino Lorenzetti are the following works:
