The class 210 is a class in Germany built submarines for the Norwegian Navy . In Norway the boats are known as the Ula class .
history
The production of the boats took place in Germany, but was an international project. The combat information and fire control systems as well as parts of the shell come from Norway, the attack sonar from Germany, the lateral sonar system from France . The boats were manufactured by the North Sea Works in Emden , which is why they are considered "German design". The boats are considered to be very quiet, but had various problems with the machinery.
The KNM Ula was damaged during a torpedo launch exercise in 1989. KNM Uredd was seriously damaged in a failed mooring maneuver in 1991 and in a fire in the control room in February 1992.
During the NATO exercise Joint Winter in 2004, one of the boats, the KNM Utvær , was disqualified because it prevented a planned landing operation, which was, however, an integral part of the exercise. It simply "sank" too many ships during the exercise, including the HMS Invincible .
For a time the boats were active in the Mediterranean , where they supported NATO's Active Endeavor operation. They turned out to be particularly effective in collecting intelligence data; however, new air conditioning systems had to be installed in order to lower the internal temperature, which had risen due to the warmer water.
The boats replaced those of class 207 . From 2006 to 2008 the submarines were modernized. In particular, they received new electronics such as a Link 11 communication system, improved electronic support measures and an improvement in the periscope . In May 2008, a contract was signed with Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace for new sonar systems that are to be installed within 52 months. The boats are to be replaced by modified submarine class 212 A boats built in Germany in the mid-2020s .
On September 11, 1995, Solveig Krey became the first woman in the world to command a submarine on KNM Uredd (S305).
