The Ulachan-Sis ridge ( Russian Кряж Улахан-Сис ), also just called Ulachan-Sis (Улахан-Сис), is up to 757  m high, about 160 km long and in the northeast of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia), of Siberia and Russia ( Asia ) mountain range in the Kolyma lowlands .

Geographical location

The Ulachan-Sis ridge is a rocky mountain range on average around 370 km north of the Arctic Circle, east of the border between the Jana-Indigirka lowlands and the Kolyma lowlands , the western and eastern parts of the East Siberian lowlands , which in turn are west, south and east of the East Siberian Mountainous country and north of the Laptev Sea (Rand Sea of the Arctic Ocean ) is surrounded.

The chain is the continuation of the eastern foothills of the Polousny Ridge east of the Indigirka . Coming from this river, the chain with the Suor-Ujata ridge adjoining it to the east strikes as an elongated and narrow spur in a west-east direction into the Kolyma lowlands. To the north it goes over the river valleys of the Great Ertscha, which rises in the chain, and the Shandrin, which flows further northeast of it, into the Kondakov plateau .

To the northeast, east and southeast of the chain lies the Kolyma lowland, which is flowed through primarily by the Kolyma , but also by the Sundrun, which rises on the northern flank of the chain . To the south, the landscape passes over the valleys of the Arga-Jurjach rivers, which originate in the chain, and the Chatystach, which runs west of it, to the Alaseja plateau , and in western directions it drops into the Jana-Indigirka lowlands, that of Jana and Indigirka is traversed. The highest mountain is Wilka ( 757  m ) in the western part of the chain .

Geology, flora and fauna

From a geological point of view, the Ulachan-Sis ridge consists of granites , Devonian sandstone and volcanic rocks . Due to the proximity of the Arctic Laptev Sea, permafrost prevails with vegetation of moss and lichen typical of the tundra . In the lower regions, boreal coniferous forests (taiga) with larches grow in some areas .

Localities

The Ulachan-Sis ridge is uninhabited, but the village Pochwalny lies to the west on the Indigirka river .
