Uladzimir Jauhenawitsch Soltan (born January 9, 1953 in Baranavichy , Soviet Union ; † June 1, 1997 in Minsk , Belarus ) was a Belarusian composer.
Life
Soltan studied composition with Anatol Bahatyrou at the Conservatory in Minsk (now the Music Academy). In 1979 he completed his studies and then worked as Bahatyrous assistant until 1983. He then became a teacher at the conservatory himself. In 1980 he joined the Soviet composers' association. In the following years he made a reputation for himself as a talented young composer within Belarus . His opera König Stach's wild hunt for a story by Uladzimir Karatkevich , which premiered in 1989, was particularly popular - also against the background of Belarusian independence efforts. In 1990 he received the State Prize of Belarus. In 1997 Soltan was killed in a traffic accident.
style
Soltan stands in the tradition of Russian or Belarusian art music. His works often use folk material or refer to national events. His second symphony, for example, is dedicated to the Minsk underground movement at the time of the German occupation in World War II. Soltan's music is based on a freely managed expanded tonality with characteristic strong chromatic or modal touches. His works are characterized by a concise rhythm, melodious lines, a rather moderate dissonance content and the renunciation of experiments in meter or scoring. Overall, his music cannot be called anachronistic, but compared to other composers of his generation, Soltan is very conservative.
