Life

After studying psychology in Mannheim, Hamburg and Hanover, he worked from 1976 to 1985 at the Institute for Sexual Research at the University of Hamburg with the psychiatrists Eberhard Schorsch († 1991) and Gunter Schmidt . After ten years (1986 to 1996) at the Psychosomatic University Clinic in Heidelberg and visiting professorships at the Universities of Freiburg and Hamburg, he joined the Heidelberg group of systemic therapy led by the psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Helm Stierlin in 1997 .

Clement is a teaching therapist for the International Society for Systemic Therapy (IGST) . From 2000 to 2001 he was President of the International Academy of Sex Research, and from 2003 to 2007 he was co-editor of the magazine Familiendynamik . He heads the Institute for Sex Therapy in Heidelberg, which he founded in 2006 together with doctor Ulrike Brandenburg (1954–2010). He is also a co-founder of the first German-language postgraduate course "Sexual Medicine / Sex Therapy" at the University of Basel . Clement is a professor at the University of Heidelberg and Basel.

With his writing Systemic Sex Therapy , he proposed a paradigm shift in the treatment of sexual disorders. It does not focus primarily on sexual function, but on the development of the individual sexual profile and communication between the two partners about their respective sexual profiles.

In a 2015 interview, Clement described authentic sexuality as the greatest good. By that he meant that every person can show himself what he is. Partners can expect each other and should also endure to be expected of each other.
