Ulrich III. von Spanheim (* around 1220; † October 27, 1269 in Cividale del Friuli ) from the noble family of Spanheimer (Sponheimer) was from 1248/51 Lord of the Mark Krain and from 1256 Duke of Carinthia .

Ulrich III. was the eldest son of Bernhard von Spanheim and Judith von Böhmen , the daughter of the Bohemian King Ottokar I. Přemysl . Through his marriage to Agnes von Andechs-Meran († 1263), the widow of Duke Friedrich II. Of Austria , Ulrich III. 1248 claims to the Mark Krain. He ruled in Carinthia from 1251 and followed his father as Duke of Carinthia in 1256 .

In 1260 Ulrich completed the foundation of the Freudenthal Charterhouse (Bistra near Oberlaibach / Vrhnika ) in Carniola, which his father had begun . He also founded the Augustinian canons stift Völkermarkt .

Despite disputes over his father's inheritance with his brother Philipp , Archbishop of Salzburg elected since 1247 , Ulrich concluded a mutual protection and inheritance treaty with him. After Philip had been deposed by King Ottokar II. Přemysl in 1256/57, in 1267 he forced Ulrich to distribute property and to establish him as heir to Carinthia and Carniola.

Ulrich III, who was without a biological successor because his son died young from his first marriage and his second marriage to Agnes von Baden-Austria (daughter of Gertrud von Babenberg ) remained childless, bequeathed in a secret, on December 4, 1268 in Podebrady signed an inheritance contract, but his cousin Ottokar II Přemysl all his possessions.

After his death, Ottokar II. Přemysl was able to prevail against Ulrich's brother Philipp in the battle for Carinthia. With Ulrich III. the rule of the Spanheimers in Carinthia ended.
