Ulrich Kaufmann (born May 31, 1840 in Grindelwald ; † March 25, 1917 there , entitled to live in Grindelwald) was a Swiss mountain guide .

Life

Ulrich Kaufmann was already involved in the first ascent of the Mönch at the age of 17 together with Sigmund Porges, an Austrian mountain pioneer and the Grindelwald mountain guides Christian Almer and Christian Kaufmann . Four years later he reached the summit of the Schreckhorn for the first time together with Leslie Stephen , Peter and Christian Michel .

As a result, Kaufmann moved abroad, where he was deployed on expeditions in New Zealand and in the Himalayas . Ulrich Kaufmann gained particular fame in 1882 through a very narrowly unsuccessful first ascent of Aoraki / Mount Cook in New Zealand, which he tackled together with the Englishman Reverend William Spottiswood Green and the Swiss hotelier Emil Boss. He achieved first ascents in the Himalayas and in Sikkim near the 7000 meter limit.

Ulrich Kaufmann, who climbed the Eiger for the first time in winter in 1890 together with the Englishmen Mead and Woodroffe and Christian Jossi , was considered the first Swiss mountain guide who was also successful abroad. The well-trained businessman, who mastered the modern mountaineering technique using rope and ice ax , was one of the world's fastest ice level rackets in his day.

Ulrich Kaufmann, who remained unmarried, died on March 25, 1917, two months before he would turn 77 in Grindelwald.
