Ulrich Kautz
Ulrich Kautz ( Chinese 高立 希 , Pinyin Gāo Lìxī , born October 29, 1939 - † August 7, 2020 ) was a German translation scholar , interpreter and translator.
Live and act
Ulrich Kautz studied interpreting and translation for English and Chinese at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig between 1957 and 1961 and graduated in 1961 as a certified translator and interpreter. From 1961 he worked as a translator and interpreter at the GDR embassy in Beijing . In 1966 he was forced to leave China as a "Soviet revisionist" with the emerging cultural revolution . Although he was not a member of the SED and would have been denied the desired academic career, he got a position at the Institute for English Studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin .
Between 1973 and 1976 Kautz worked as chief translator at the GDR trade agency in Beijing. After returning from China, he received his doctorate in 1980 in the Chinese Studies department at the Humboldt University in Berlin with a thesis on the translation of German relative clauses into Chinese . He then worked as a university lecturer and scientist in language mediator training. Here he developed a new course of study for the practice of translation and interpreting for the Chinese / German language pair, which, however, was given up after reunification. Kautz moved to the Goethe Institute in 1992 and finally went to the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in 1998 , where he taught until his retirement and was appointed associate professor .
In addition to his practical work in China and as a scientist and university lecturer in Germany, Ulrich Kautz has made an appearance since 1980 primarily because of his numerous literary translations by Chinese authors. These include Deng Youmei, Wang Meng , Wang Shuo , Yu Hua , Yan Lianke and Lu Wenfu , among others . In August 2007, at the Beijing Book Fair, he received a prize for special services to Chinese books abroad from the Chinese Ministry of Culture.
