Ulrich Langenmantel vom Sparren (* around 1410 in Augsburg ; † after 1473) was an Augsburg patrician son of the Langenmantel family , clergyman, lawyer and provost of Völkermarkt in Carinthia .

Live and act

He was born as the son of the Augsburg patrician Hartmann II. Langenmantel and his first wife Elisabeth geb. Ilsung .

Ulrich Langenmantel entered the clergy and became canon of St. Moritz in Augsburg . In the winter semester of 1426/1427 he studied in Vienna , from 1435 to 1437 at the University of Bologna and in 1439 at the University of Padua . In 1436 he is named in Bologna as procurator for German students, as well as artibus doctor and master of law . At both Italian universities he was together with the later cathedral dean and vicar general Leonhard Gessel († 1465).

1437 (old sources say because of read errors: 1432) Ulrich Langenmantel received by Pope Eugene IV. The Office of the Provost at the collegiate international market, at the local parish church was located.

On September 28, 1464, Langenmantel endowed Augsburg's first study foundation. He donated money for the study of 5 poor theology students who had to be Augsburg citizens' sons or should come from the diocese of Augsburg . From 1537 onwards, the imperial city, which had since been part of the Reformation, financed the municipal grammar school from this foundation, today the grammar school near St. Anna . The foundation was later returned to its original purpose for Catholic theology students; From 1741 it was reduced to 3 students, in 1806 the foundation's assets amounted to 5000 guilders, of which 200 guilders were paid annually in interest for the scholarship holders. The institution existed until the second half of the 19th century.

On June 14, 1473 Ulrich Langenmantel vom Sparren resigned from his office as provost in Völkermarkt. When and where he died is not recorded.

Knight Johann IX. Langenmantel vom Sparren († 1505) was his nephew, the Freising Canon Christoph Langenmantel (1488–1538), in 1518 Martin Luther's escape helper from Augsburg, a great nephew.
