Life

Ulrich Meurer grew up in the Rhineland and studied philosophy after graduating from high school . Due to his politically active and intellectual family environment, he was socially committed from an early age. His younger brother Harald Meurer founded the first German donation portal HelpDirect.org in 1999 and also received the Federal Cross of Merit in 2012 for his services as an Internet pioneer.

In the mid-1980s, Ulrich Meurer campaigned against Peter Gauweiler's policies . The CSU politician was heavily criticized for his "catalog of measures to ward off AIDS".

In 1985, Meurer played a key role in setting up AIDS support in Karlsruhe . From 1988 to 1990 he was a board member of Deutsche AIDS-Hilfe , where he represented the Berlin state level in the delegates' council from 2009 to 2011. He was also the HIV consultant for Berliner AIDS-Hilfe, where he was also on the board from 2005 to 2012.

In 1989, Meurer co-founded Café PositHIV in Berlin - a non-commercial self-help project for people with HIV and AIDS. In the years that followed, the café served as a model for comparable projects in other German cities. Ulrich Meurer was also a member of the National AIDS Advisory Board and in 1996 was one of the initiators of the “Netzwerk plus”, which became a nationwide contact point for people with HIV and AIDS. In 1998, together with Deutsche AIDS-Hilfe, he launched the Konrad Lutz Prize, which honors artistic work on living with HIV and AIDS.
