Ulrich Renz (historian)

Ulrich Renz (born May 20, 1934 in Stuttgart ) is a German journalist and historian .

Life

Renz grew up in Giengen an der Brenz . After attending grammar school, he learned the journalistic trade at the Heidenheimer Zeitung in the mid-1950s and then worked as an editor in Heidenheim an der Brenz . In 1959 he switched to the German-language service of the United Press International (UPI) news agency in Frankfurt am Main . There he became head of the domestic editorial team and later head of service in Zurich and Frankfurt am Main. In 1971 he moved to the Associated Press (AP) news agency , where he was editor-in-chief from 1986 to 1992.

One focus of his work was court reporting at the Federal Constitutional Court . Renz also reported on fifteen Nazi trials , including the Auschwitz trials .

Even after retirement, Ulrich Renz, who now lives in Karlsruhe , works as a freelance journalist and author of historical writings. In 1989 his book Lauter dutiful people appeared , in which he worked up the résumés of perpetrators in the Third Reich . Until they were discontinued in 2012, he wrote for the magazine Tribüne zur Understanding Judaism.

Renz has been working with Georg Elser since his time in Heidenheim. In archives he discovered numerous documents that are groundbreaking for the historical processing of the importance of this resistance fighter , including a. the investigation report on Elser in the Swiss Federal Archives requested by the Gestapo from Switzerland . Renz has worked at the Georg Elser Memorial in Königsbronn since 1999 . In 2004 he received the Königsbronn community badge for his services to Elser . He is the author of the biography Georg Elser - Ein Meister der Tat , published in 2009 in the series Formative Heads from the Southwest .
