Ulrich Schläpfer (* 1580 in Trogen , † 23. September 1651 ibid ; heimatberechtigt in Trogen) was a Swiss textile merchants , state governor, bailiff and Diet envoy from the canton of Appenzell Outer Rhodes .

Life

Ulrich Schläpfer was probably a son of Jörg Schläpfer, the first canvas manufacturer in Appenzell Ausserrhoden and landlord , and Katharina Brenter. Presumably he was the half-brother of Pelagius Schläpfer . Before 1606 he married Katharina Sonderegger. After 1621 Schläpfer took Kathrina Koller as his wife.

Schläpfer probably worked as a linen dealer and landlord . He benefited from his father's reputation and was elected to the highest political offices. From 1618 he was mayor of Trogen. From 1621 to 1646 he worked as governor of Ausserrhoder. He officiated from 1646 to 1651 as Landammann of Ausserrhoder and delegate of the Diet. His election to the highest regional office in 1646 was a demonstration of power by the more populous Appenzeller Vorderland compared to the Appenzeller Hinterland . Schläpfer was an opponent of the so-called Kehrordnung introduced in 1647, which should have appeased the rivalries between the two parts of the country in front of the Sitter and behind the Sitter. He received criticism for his behavior in the dispute over the location of the Kurzenberg Church in 1651, as he was looking for a confrontation with the hinterland and strongly advocated the location of Heiden .
